Creative Refueling

mixed media art background

Yay! I got made some time this last week to do some creating! It felt sooo good… well… once I got back into a groove… I had a couple of brain freezes because I’m so out of practice/routine. I haven’t done much creating in the last several months… I’ve been a little busy… right? That’s what I thought… and yes, I have been very busy packing, moving, unpacking, settling, getting snowed in and trying to keep kids busy and entertained, and on and on. BUT… I wasn’t making time to be creative… I didn’t think I had time and honestly I didn’t really have the desire. It’s been a hard few months… really hard, I’m not gonna lie… I’ve been exhausted and stressed… I’ve questioned things and wondered and worried and been anxious… even though I know we are where we’re supposed to be/meant to be and I am glad to be back, but it’s still been hard and creative time just hasn’t seemed like a priority and I’ve just been too emotionally wiped out to even want to try to be creative.

However, I forced myself last weekend to get into my space and do… something… anything. Thankfully it was spurred on by a friend asking me to help her make some stuff for her daughter’s birthday party and a few days later my Mom asking me to help her make a canvas and so I decided to work on one with her… we didn’t get very far but it made me realize how I’d missed being creative and how much of a refreshment & happiness builder it can be for me. I’ve always felt that when I make time to be creative I’m refueled to take on the challenges of life… but in the busy-ness of life, I’d kinda forgotten and lost sight of my neediness of it.

mixed media scripture art journal I’m definitely going to start making more time for it, the benefits far outweigh the struggle of finding the time! And, as a reminder… I think I’m going to print out this free Create Every Day printable from Kim over at Everything Etsy, you should check it out too!

Have you made time for creativity lately? Is it something you find hard to make time for right now or is it coming easily? What kind of creative work makes you happiest and most fulfilled or refueled?

Happy Thanksgiving!

It’s important to be thankful everyday, but especially on this day… to pause and take time to reflect on all the one million and one reasons! So, while you are indulging in the turkey and pumpkin pie and all the other wonderfulness that is enjoyed in your family, take a minute to list out a few of those things.

One of the things on my 35 by 35 list was to start a 1000 gifts list and continue it… what better time to start that list than in this Thanksgiving month… and that’s just what I’ve done. I thought about all the different ways I could record those gifts and decided to just keep an ongoing list on twitter… I’ll have a record of it and be able to share it at the same time… you can follow me if you’d like… @alterediris. I’m trying to add at least 5 a day… and maybe you’d like to join me? If not on twitter, how about in a traditional notebook or on a chalkboard in your home or on a list app on your smartphone? There are so many possibilities… it doesn’t have to be perfect but it’s a great habit to get into… they say it’ll make you 25% happier… so why not, take time and count your blessings! Today’s a great day to start! 🙂

Happy Thanksgiving! May you truly enjoy this day!

New Custom Artwork

I hope you had a nice weekend! Hubby and I had a chance to get away on a little marriage retreat with our church this weekend… it was wonderful and a big thanks to my sweet cousin, Rachel for watching our kiddos!

Today, I wanted to share a new piece of art I’ve been working on! Several weeks ago a customer requested a custom large format print for her office. I was able to create this one of a kind canvas to turn into a custom print for her. I love doing custom pieces and am able to take a scripture or quote of your choice; use either your chosen color scheme, surprise you with one or use photos of the room you want a custom piece for and match the colors to create a one of a kind piece of art! It also makes a wonderful one of a kind gift. Did you know there are less than 100 days until Christmas!? 😉 The average custom order only takes 4-6 weeks*… so don’t panic, you still have time! 🙂

Now is a great time to start thinking about Christmas and contact me soon, I’d love to work with you to create just the right custom art for yourself or as a gift for someone special!

*Some orders do take longer depending on the size and details of the requested custom piece.

Only the Size of A Mustard Seed

{Necklace from Allie M Designs on Etsy}

Wowsers and Yikes! Two weeks have passed so quickly and so much has happened in the past 14 days!

Two weeks ago (on the 25th) we headed to Colorado in search of a place to lay our heads and call home for a time as we adjust to Colorado living and decide where we want to plant ourselves long term. It was a long and somewhat grueling process which was not what we expected. We began our search in the northern suburbs of Denver and were certain that of the 5 or so places we had scheduled to see we would be able to find just the place, get our deposit down that day and head home soon after. Well, we were sorely disappointed… it did not go at all as we had expected and we were left at the end of day one feeling tired, frustrated and wondering what in the world we were getting ourselves into… had we made a terrible mistake? We asked ourselves… what now?!?

So, we took the kids to the pool at our hotel… gathered our thoughts… prayed (a lot) and decided to press on. The next day we found a new area to search and upon pulling into the new town, we knew this was a much better fit for our family. With it being a holiday weekend, it was difficult to get ahold of people in order to see the potential homes and so we decided we needed to stay an extra day or two. At which point we switched hotels and started part two of our journey. It was almost immediately more exciting and we had so much more peace about it all.

By then end of the day Tuesday things seemed to be coming together… we had several good options and were hopeful we would be able to put a deposit down and have a place secured, which is what we had set out to accomplish on our trip.

Wednesday, after seeing two more places we were able to make a decision, put a deposit down and even sign our lease… SUCCESS! We had accomplished our goal and checked one more “big” thing off our list. The next hurdle… finding a job.

This adventure has brought a lot of ups and downs, a large gamut of emotions… including a lot of fear… a couple of times we’ve considered calling the whole thing off. But, when we push the fear aside we are left with faith… and as Matthew 17:20 says… “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

All it takes is faith as small as a mustard seed… those aren’t very big and I have to say there’s been moments I could barely muster faith that big… but we’ve persevered, we’re setting out to finish this “race”… who would have thought that chasing a dream would be this tough… but at times it has been, but we are trusting that on the other side all of this work, all of the emotion, the fear, the challenges and difficulties, the effort… we are trusting that all of it will be worth it and if all else fails, it will at least be an adventure that caused growth and a learning experience.

Some really great quotes I found, (because I couldn’t choose just one):

The fact is, that to do anything in the world worth doing, we must not stand back shivering and thinking of the cold and danger, but jump in and scramble through as well as we can.
Robert Cushing

Change and growth take place when a person has risked himself and dares to become involved with experimenting with his own life.
Herbert Otto

If we all did the things we are capable of,
we would astound ourselves.
Thomas Edison

So, whatever challenge your facing today or whatever dream you are dreaming of… I encourage you to press on, keep going, take baby steps and don’t give up. Trust God, find that faith, even if a mustard seed sized faith is all you can muster and trust that it’s all going to work out. Even if in the end you find yourself only learning a lesson, learn it with all your might and allow it to help you grow.

James 1:2-4 says  “ Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,  because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.  Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Oh! And just in case you’re wondering… the town we settled on… Fort Collins, CO! It’s a great city with a special place in our hearts that I’ll share another day… and in just a couple more weeks we’ll be there and I’ll be able to share our adventures in our new city with you! Can’t wait!

Artsy Fartsy Friday!

TGIF! Yippee for another Artsy Fartsy Friday! I actually finished the piece! 😉 It’s taken me a while, but it’s complete and I must say that I’m pleased with the results!

So, about a month ago I left off here… before the house went on the market and the craziness ensued! 😉

Here’s a reminder of where I was last month.

Next I took my Faber-Castell India Ink pens and drew in some flowers on either side of the tree.

After that, I took a piece of white cardstock, smeared some paint onto it and wrote the scripture verse I chose to use: “There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1

I had thought of this verse a while back and decided it was the one I wanted to use. This is a pretty well-known section of scripture, one that was even put into a song (several times), originally in 1959 by The Byrds (“Turn, Turn, Turn”). That song is somewhat near and dear to my heart because when I was a Junior in high school I choreographed a dance to that song that I performed on several occasions to the Dakoda Motor Co. version and have since enjoyed listening to the Adie Camp version.

The scripture goes on to say… “a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.” Ecc 3:2-8.

I think at any time there is probably one of these “time sayings” that can particularly “speak” to us in the various circumstances in our lives. The one that jumped out to me in this time of my life was “a time to plant and a time to uproot” because I feel that that’s where our family is at right now. In the process of “uprooting” our family… moving to another state and then we’ll be “planting” ourselves in a new place… and although it wasn’t planned, it’s quite perfect that the image on this art is of a tree.

Thanks for letting me share this process with you… I hope to do it again soon!

Which one of these “time” sayings do you feel applies to you right now? Which one “speaks” to you? I’d love to hear your story.
